31st Oct 2025

We're pleasaed to introduce Sam Barnett who has recently joined Glasgow City Council as the Head of Invest Glasgow. In this spotlight feature, Sam takes some time to introduce herself.
How long have you worked for the council?
3 months (newbie)!
What brought you to Invest Glasgow?
Having worked in economic development for over 15 years now, and most recently owned my own consultancy business - I have watched in awe at what Glasgow is achieving. I love the ambition and energy of Glasgow and the fact it is focused on delivery! Glasgow gets things done. So, I jumped at the chance to play a role in that and join a fabulous team and local authority and here I am!
Please tell us about your current role.
I lead Invest Glasgow, which is Glasgow’s Investment Promotion Agency – showcasing to the world, what Glasgow has to offer and attracting all types of investment.
A major part of my role is to lead and support the development of inward investment propositions. This done in partnership with colleagues and organisations across the city and region, again supporting all sectors.
Collaboration and partnership working is a huge highlight, and our “One Glasgow Team” approach ensures that we are working together, and organisations benefit from all we have to offer collectively.
People and place are at the heart of what we do. We want to ensure organisations have the support they need to grow and innovate, no matter what stage they are at. We are also developing a robust investment pipeline and want to work with investors on emerging investment opportunities.
It’s equally important that that the benefits of investment are felt across the city and region. We work closely with colleagues to address major social, environmental and economic challenges.
Glasgow is leading with confidence, and we are working hard to ensure that Glasgow City and Region continues to be recognised as a leading destination for investment.
What makes Glasgow special?
I love Glasgow. I came in 1999 to go to university and haven’t left. I live in Glasgow with my husband and two young kids and proud that they are born and bred here!
The people make Glasgow, with their friendliness and the banter! You are always guaranteed a laugh and people will always go out their way to help you.
Glasgow has an edge, it’s got spirit and fight, its ambitious and strong, its heritage is tangible.
It’s a brilliant place to live, work and most importantly have fun. We are lucky to be able to enjoy all Scotland has to offer. Within close proximity you are in the midst of mountains, trails and lochs (what I love) and still only a short hop on a train gets you into the city for pints with pals or a day shopping with my youngest (that I also love)!
Any first impressions?
Since Joining in August, I have been so impressed with the level of support offered underpinned by collaboration and partnerships. We want people to come to Glasgow and love it as much as we do. Glasgow is an affordable, vibrant and pioneering destination. Get in touch with our wonderful team if we can help in anyway.
