The Central District is Glasgow’s busiest urban core, containing major transport hubs, George Square, and the Golden Z retail spine. Regeneration efforts focus on rebalancing movement, improving air quality and expanding pedestrian first space through the Avenues Programme, Scotland’s largest public realm investment. Many projects across Argyle Street, North Hanover Street, and Sauchiehall Street are currently under construction or completing.
As regeneration progresses, the district faces the challenge of balancing its high footfall and commercial density with the need for improved public spaces, reduced vehicle dominance and enhanced environmental resilience. The District Regeneration Framework outlines a vision for a greener, better connected and more inclusive Central District that supports a thriving mix of retail, culture, business and leisure.
A major catalyst is the circa £20 million pound George Square transformation which is due to complete in Autumn 2026 while the surrounding streets are due to be complete by Spring 2027.
